Rijkswater staat participeert actief in het identificeren van kansen voor optimalisatie van het watersysteem. Rijkswaterstaat ziet op dit moment in tijd geen concrete aanhakingspunten met het Robuust Watersysteem. Binnen Zeeuws Vlaanderen spelen de ontwikkelingen rond de aanleg van de Nieuwe Sluis bij Terneuzen en het opstellen van de Agenda van de Toekomst. Beide trajecten kennen echter een sterke eigen dynamiek wat de kansen voor het Robuust Watersysteem op dit moment sterk minimaliseert. Die drie thema’s zijn bepalend voor dit semester. Zij hangen nauw samen als behorend bij de veranderende samenleving. Je bent actief op je leerwerkplek, je doet mee aan een PLG of je helpt een projectweek organiseren. Je leert door mee te doen, door vragen te stellen, door lessen te ontwerpen, te geven en te evalueren. Je voert een onderzoek uit dat gericht is op het verbeteren van je onderwijs. Dat alles doe je op basis van je eigen planning. Science in Residence (SiR) Veere is een samenwerkingsproject tussen de gemeente Veere en de HZ University of Applied Sciences met als doel op locatie in gezamenlijkheid te werken aan maatschappelijk vraagstukken met alle betrokken waaronder medewerkers van de gemeente Veere en docent-onderzoekers en studenten van de HZ. Voor beide partijen moet dit leiden tot een grotere maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. De werkvorm die is gekozen is die van een living lab. Een living lab is een setting waarin een maatschappelijk vraagstuk met alle betrokkenen (3 O’s en burgers) op locatie wordt onderzocht en oplossingsrichtingen worden verkend. Voor het concretiseren van het living lab concept wordt als voorbeeld de ontwikkeling van IKC Zoutelande uitgewerkt. Deze uitwerking kan worden gezien als een blauwdruk voor de te ontwikkelen andere IKC’s en living labs in andere domeinen. Dit living lab gaat in september 2017 op te starten. Daarom kunnen studenten Pedagogiek en PABO direct aansluiten middels het uitvoeren van hun projectopdracht.

Since three years the Japanese oyster drill (Ocinebrellus inornatus) has become a big threat to oyster cultivation in the Oosterschelde and other systems in the South Western Delta of the Netherlands. Since there are gaps in knowledge or contradicting evidence about general oyster drill behavior (mobility, predation activity, predation preference and how it relates to season/temperature), practical research experiments are necessary. This research will focus on mapping the mobility of oyster drills in the field, ideally with tracking transponders, and if possible analyze how mobility is related to water temperature.

Water sensitive area development in the Waterpoort region + (The HZ Delta Academy participates together …
The HZ Delta Academy participates together with 3 provinces, 9 municipalities, two other Universities of Applied Sciences and several other organizations in Waterpoort. Waterpoort is an area development process initiated by the province of Brabant to create new opportunities in the mainly rural area around the Volkerak-Zoom lake. In this area redevelopment process, involved governments, businesses, ngo’s and citizens try to find new roles in water related area development. The involved organizations try to stimulate and facilitate citizens and local businesses to innovate, to restore connectivity with the water and to co-create an identity and future of the area. In this project you will build on previous research. With input from participating students we created an overview of the different user groups in Waterpoort and their relation with the water system, as well as an overview of the main historical drivers for transitions in the area. New insights about water sensitive area development are brought together in an overall document, called the ‘Atlas of the Waterpoort’. Follow-up assignments are pending. The NEREUS project is an Interreg 2 Seas project working with partners from the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and France aiming to recover valuable resources such as water, energy and nutrients from urban wastewater. The overall project lasts for 4 years, during which contributing research questions need to be answered. The water technology research group is in need of a student who can work on one of these contributing questions; the investigation of several scenario studies. A scenario in this case is considered to be a certain "train" or set-up of various water treatment technologies in sequence. The student will, using the help of a model, be able to advise on the effectiveness of each scenario in the recovering of the desired resources. The Oosterschelde basin and area are central in this project. Sea level rise due to climate change will have its impact on the safety of Oosterschelde area and the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier. In the long term the present system and management will not be able to guarantee the safety of the Oosterschelde area. On top of the safety issue, there are also changing societal demands and unforeseen effects of the Delta Works. Rijkswaterstaat is in need of new strategy to ensure the safety and take the ecological and economical demands into account. We will use a sea level rise scenario (e.g., 150 cm in 2100) that is beyond the capability of the storm surge barrier. After a problem analysis the students will design a future scenario that deals with (future) safety, ecology and economy requirements of the various stakeholders. Next, the students will use backcasting to design a roadmap that will lead the stakeholders to this desired future scenario.

As a consequence, spatial claims and dredging activities cause pressure on the natural capital of the estuary and require compensation. In port Vlissingen-east, for instance, an extension of quays will take place and will be combined with a nature development in the Schorerpolder next to the port. The aim of this work package is to ensure a well-managed project. The project is controlled by a Steering Group under the leadership of a project manager designated by the lead partner. All partners will operate in regional groups led by a regional coordinator. The transnational work groups at work package level shall report to the Steering Group. Overall project management includes financial management and reporting to NSR JTS. Focus Groups formed by experts throughout the partnership specialise on joint problem-solving for a specific pilot. The knowledge institutes will form a working group that coordinates the integration of approaches and results in order to further support capacity building across the partnership and the NSR. The knowledge institutes in the project form the core of the transnational expert team that shares, collects and analyses information and experiences. Authorities will work together to provide the local, regional and national knowledge that is necessary to successfully integrate MLS in the spatial, environmental, economic and legal context. The non-governmental organisations will bring the project closer to the communities that are under risk of being flooded and therefore allow bottom-up approach when improving resilience.

The focus on social innovation makes communication a key element for the long term success of the project: it depends on the active participation of the target groups and lives on through an active stakeholder involvement. (1) Internal communication and involvement of the target groups: the elderly and local service providers are very different and both will need targeted communication in order to reach them effectively and ensure their longterm engagement. Elderly are a particularly difficult group to reach, the partners will develop a set of tools that helps to ensure the active engagement of the elderly in the pilots, based both on past experiences and also on the contributions of the observer partners who are representing elderly. (2) External communication. Active engagement with wider stakeholders is crucial to disseminate project results, but even more to ensure the transfer and durability of the project results and outputs. From the beginning, partner will identify and engage with potential follower communities that can take up the results and implement further (through targeted information, coaching, inviting them to relevant project events etc.). They will also make active use of their existing networks to ensure a wide uptake of the project through regular information.
