Earth Enable + Dirt floors make children across rural Africa sick, and 1.4 billion people live and sleep on a dirt floor. Replacing a dirt floor with a concrete floor reduces diarrhea and parasitic infections, but concrete is both environmentally destructive and unaffordable to the world’s poor. Earth Enable is a Research & Development partnership and addresses this problem by installing sustainable and affordable earthen floors that have fewer carbon emissions than concrete, and are also a third of the price of concrete. While our product has found a huge market of families who are eager to upgrade their homes, we have significant challenges that we are eager to partner with teams of students to address! You can work on subjects like: floor color, resin curing, resin hardness, and stabilization of the floor.  +

Effect of N:P ration on biomass productivity and lipid content on Skeletonema costatum + In this research we will examine how variations in the nitrate-to-phosphate ratio of the growth medium affect the particulate N:P in batch cultures of Skeletonema costatum at irradiances that limit and saturate growth rate. Batch cultures have the advantage of mimicking the onset of nutrient limitation, while the cells are in a transient state. The main focus is the extent to which the elemental stoichiometry of phytoplankton, at various growth stages reflects the nutrient elemental composition of the culture medium.  +
Effect of inundation time on oyster spat settlement and do these effect in settlement stage affect oyster performance during later culture stages? + The focus will be on the amount of spat settled, on the growth and on the survival of mussel spat on spat collectors as a function of inundation time. After collecting the spat from the oyster spat collectors we want to test how inundation time in the settlement stage affects the performance of the oysters in baskets in the off-bottom oyster culture at the same inundation time. Research type: desk study, sampling & experiments (HZ, Vlissingen) Research level: minor/internship (BSc.) Perquisite: preferably affinity with biology, analytical skills, driving license  +
Effect of light intensity and temperature on biomass productivity and content of Skeletonema costatum + In this research the microalgae diatom Skeletonema costatum will be examined. The influence of light intensity and temperature on the behavior of Skeletonema and the results on the photosynthetic yield will be obtained. Biological parameters to describe this behavior will be studied using lab scale photo-bioreactors (PBRS).  +
Effect of predation by the crab Carcinus maenas and shrimp Crangon crangon on the survivalrate of shellfish Venerupis decussatus + To investigate whether cultivation of Manila clams is feasible and commercially interesting for grow-out production in the Eastern Scheldt, we want to conduct field- and laboratory studies. Predation by common shore crab (Carcinus maenas) and brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) is of major importance for Manila clam survival, particularly for spat.  +
Efficiency of fishing gear in extensive mussel culture + Quantify and visualize mussel dredge performance, by means of under water video cameras. This research involves field work (on mussel vessels), video analysis, technical improvements on dredges. Research level: minor/internship/final thesis (BSc. level). Perquisite: Driver license, Dutch speaking, technical skills, dedicated and creative.  +

Eradication of oyster drill egg capsules + Oyster farmers want to find a way to eradicate oyster drill egg capsules, after fishing the oysters from the bottom plot. For example by exposing oysters with egg capsules to warm water, acid, ultra sound or other treatments that can be performed on an oyster vessel. This will be performed by means of practical lab-experiments and additional literature research.  +

Explore + Combatting loneliness for the people aged 70 – 79 and people with second residencies in the area by using especially improved communication tools and offering targeted leisure offers. The partners (Lead = Westtoer) and the city of Oostende would like to find new methods how to engage with the elderly, and specifically second residents. In 2016 Westtoer published a report on the ‘Impact of second residents on Coastal tourism’. The report included quantitative information of possible communication methods. This pilot aims to apply new methods based on this research and needs assessment. E.g. there is an interest of 41% of second residents to have more contact with local residents.  20th of June: focusgroups with elderly and second residents older then 55 + who visit the Belgian Coast: 10 participants  6th of July: A Sea of time: citizens, experts and local entrepreneurs  19th of September: focus group ‘Vrijetijdsmobiel’ (‘Leisure Mobile’): sports department, contact point seniors in need, the district manager of the city centre, S-Plus, the culture department (UiTPAS), the library of Ostend, the cultural centre ‘De Grote Post’ and the elderly and volunteer policy coordinator. Pilot beneficiaries of the pilot are:  Workgroups ‘neighbourhood residents’  Second residents  Local business providers, such as restaurants, hotels, attractions providers The goal is to have an increased participation in leisure activities using especially improved communication tools and to involve elderly and second residents more to prevent loneliness. 8 ideas were concretely developed during the focus group with second residents:  Extension cultural offer for second residents  Inclusive community network  Meet and greet  Welcome in our community  Reduction voucher  Fidelity card for second residents  Workshops with starters kit Below are the values detected via the focus groups:  Flexibility: second residents want to decide themselves when they participate. They don’t want to enter into an agreement to participate e.g. on a weekly base.  Being active: participants expressed that they wanted to join a local cycling or hiking club  Involvement: participants would consider to be a volunteer and to get to know their neighbours  +

FRAMES: Flood Resilient Areas by MultiLayered Safety + This website is a draft version of the online learning environment of FRAMES (Flood Resilient Areas by MultilayEred Safety). The FRAMES project is cofunded by the EU Interreg North Sea Region Program. *1 October 2016 - 31 January 2020 *Total budget € 6.924.911 *ERDF contribution € 3.462.455 Partners: Province of Zuid-Holland (Lead Beneficiary), Province of Zeeland, Rijkswaterstaat Zee en Delta, HZ University of Applied Sciences, Veiligheidsregio Zeeland, Kent County Council, Consortium Rivers Trust (Rivers Trust, Tees Rivers Trust, Trent Rivers Trust, National Flood Forum), Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, Jade Hochschule, Oldenburgisch-Ostfriesischer Wasserverband, Province of Oost Vlaanderen, University Gent, Danish Coastal Authority. [http://www.Northsearegion.eu/frames/ Northsearegion.eu/frames] Sustainable North Sea Region: Protecting against climate change and preserving the environment FRAMES addresses the shared territorial challenge that on-going climate change results in increasing sea levels and extreme rainfall patterns for areas and communities in the North Sea Region. The physical, economic and social effects of floods are likely to increase further. Traditional flood prevention measures (physical infrastructure) are expensive and may not be sustainable for the future. There will never be enough resources to protect every single citizen from flooding, but if we smartly combine resilience measures we can minimise impact. No one organisation or member state has the knowledge to develop sustainable solutions for these challenges alone. For this, we use the Multi-Layer Safety (MLS) concept as a starting point. The MLS concept is a policy strategy that integrates measures for: prevention, mitigation via spatial planning and emergency response. These layers are traditionally managed by different authorities and sectors, but through MLS, the barriers are lifted and the stakeholders jointly apply the most effective combination of solutions. The MLS principles are being acknowledged by more and more authorities and practitioners across the NSR, but have thus far not been developed in a transnational way. The FRAMES partners are experimenting with MLS-related concepts and will build on this experience to realise sustainable strategies and improve the capacity of authorities and society to cope with flooding.
