Wellbeing and food is the second theme that partners have identified as a key issue that is both important for theelderly and provides good development potential for the local economy: several smart and unlikely combinations can be established here. The proposed pilots also address a particular territorial challenge of the 2 Seas coastal areas: isolation and loneliness is a common problem among elderly. Especially in places where first and second residents and tourists form distinct groups of elderly, the problem is even further exacerbated. The partners tackle the topic from a number of different angles: wellbeing in the context of specific health problems (Norfolk, Dementia Friendly Walking), the inclusion of caregivers and local farms in the cycle (France), healthy food (Zeeland) and communication aspects (Belgium). This variety ensures that the developed solutions can be taken up by many other communities, depending on what particular problems they face. It also means that the SAIL social innovation process will be tested against different conditions: concrete pilot ideas and solution-open pilots are competing strategies to find out which process works more effectively. As for the movement pilots, no investments are planned: where investments are necessary, they will be financed through other means. Each pilot is expected to deliver a social and/or economic return and the readiness of stakeholders to invest in this process is a further factor to define the success.

Seas and oceans are drivers for the economy and have great potential for innovation and growth.
Increasing production of seafood may sometimes conflict with other users of coastal areas. Especially in near shore areas this can be a major threshold for growth and innovation in the aquaculture sector. There is a need for new concepts in spatial planning how to combine functions in near shore areas. The Oosterschelde, located in the Southwestern Delta in the Netherlands, is an important shellfish production site. In this Living Lab new concepts of combining functions in technical, policy and administrative sense.

Yara Sluiskil is aiming to achieve zero emission. Therefore, we are working on novel water treatment methods which are more sustainable compared to conventional methods. Hence, algae for water treatment is studied using a pilot-scale open pond system in which algae are grown, thereby removing nitrogen pollutants from the water. At this point of the research, automation and optimization of the pond are essential, thereby aiming for a full-scale set-up. Optimization of algae growth factors and the operation of two ponds in series for water polishing will be the main topics. Daarnaast runt Zeeland Seaports het Multi Utility Provider project. Alle activiteiten kennen een sterke water component en komen overeen met de doelstellingen van het Robuust Watersysteem. Zeeland Seaports wil kunnen inspringen op de huidige en toekomstige vraag vanuit bedrijven naar het (water)duurzaam inrichten van de haven/bedrijventerreinen.
