The Schorerpolder is located between the port of Vlissingen and the cities of Middelburg and Vlissingen. The area is located near an agricultural land and is owned by Zeeland Seaports. The owner wants to use the polder for nature compensation of a port expansion to be developed in the future. The idea is to create a low-dynamic estuarine habitat, which contributes to the nature objectives of the Westerschelde. Four design variants for a future design were established through workshops and developed in terms of morphology and ecology. However, many aspects are still unanswered.
In this project you as a civil engineer must focus on cost-effective measures and necessary adjustments in the flood defense system, roads, cables and pipelines.
As an example you can focus on the design of the new dike taking in account the failure mechanisms of it, what kind of measures should be implemented against salinization, or how the road network could be updated in the area to accommodate the changes including new recreational routes.
